Intro to Woodland & Savanna Burning for WI Landowners
Classroom topics are presented live in an indoor classroom. Topics include fire ecology, tools, fuels & fire behavior, as well as safety and crew structures. A pen and notebook are encouraged for the Classroom Session, but bring your enthusiasm and excitement to learn & engage. For the Field Session, you will need to be wearing all natural fibers (wool, cotton, linen). Some Nomex PPE will be available to borrow. Please make sure you have a water bottle and snacks that you can bring out in the field with you. In order to execute prescribed burning training, a safe environment is key. Weather conditions such as wind, humidity, precipitation, and other factors are taken into consideration. If any of these factors are not met, the field session will be postponed to a “rain date” listed above.
Lunch & Learn: Preparing for the Burn
Wisconsin consists of nearly 17 million acres of woodlands, which make up approximately 47% of the land cover in Wisconsin. Deploying fire through different land types is crucial to improving our native landscape. Fire improves native habitats for wildlife by reducing dead vegetation and stimulating new growth.
During this Lunch and Learn, there will be a brief introduction to the Wisconsin Prescribed Fire Council, and then we will be exploring how to properly prepare your wooded land for a burn. Covering topics from tree and brush removal, fire break development, heavy fuels reduction, and holding concerns, this will be a must-attend if you have woodlands you manage!
Burning in the woods has a multitude of benefits for habitat for pollinators, deer, and game birds. Come learn how to start preparing your land for prescribed fire, the benefits of prescribed fire, and the risks to consider.
Lunch & Learn: Flux Towers Measure the Breathing Land
Wandering the trails at Three Waters Reserve, you may have noticed a shiny new addition to the landscape – a newly installed flux tower and solar panel. This tower is designed to monitor the environmental impacts of the restoration work taking place across Three Waters Reserve. Think of it as a supercharged stethoscope for the land: the sensors measure what gases (such as greenhouse gases) are absorbed by plants and soil microbes, and what is released back into the atmosphere.
One of only about 120 flux towers deployed worldwide, this station places Three Waters Reserve at the forefront of global research evaluating how carbon and water move through ecosystems. In simple terms, the tower is monitoring the…
